Confirmed:Ajax ace,£100m striker ,pogba replacement ,seven possible Ten hag signings that will win him the league .
Erik ten Hag’s arrival at Manchester
United will spark a summer of change
at Old Trafford, with the club likely
to draft in several key recruits – to the
delight of frustrated fans.
The Ajax manager’s appointment was
finally confirmed on Thursday, with the
Dutchman set to take over from Ralf
at the end of the season – when he will
be immediately tasked with giving the
Red Devils a new lease of life.
And, according to reports, he will be
given the necessary funds to do just that.
It is claimed owners the Glazer family
are set hand Ten Hag a whopping £200million
war chest as he looks to stamp his own
authority on his new side in a major
squad overhaul.
It looks to be an exciting new era at
Old Trafford with his impending arrival
already getting excited United fans talking
.
talkSPORT host Simon Jordan, however
, has warned supporters not to get too
overexcited as he believes it could take
up to SEVEN transfer windows to get
the Red Devils firing on all fronts again.
“I think this guy has a terribly difficult
task, the poor sod,” said the former Crystal
Palace owner.
“If he’s going to be given an opportunity
, he’s got seven transfer windows within
the contract he has been given, and he
needs all of them to turn this team around.”
Plenty of new player arrivals are anticipated
in the near future, and talkSPORT.com
has taken a look at seven potential recruits
who could follow Ten Hag to Old Trafford.
Starting with the shining star of his current team…
Antony (Ajax)
One of the top names on Ten Hag’s list
is likely to be Ajax forward Antony.
The Brazil international has emerged as
one of the brightest young stars in Europe
following his move to Ajax from Sao
Paulo in June 2020.
The 22-year-old has netted 12 goals
and contributed to ten assists across
33 appearances this campaign. Following
his stunning performances in Amsterdam
, he has also earned nine caps for the
Brazil national team.
Any deal could cost in the region of £
50million to prize him away from the
Johan Cruyff Arena, however.
United are currently well stocked in
attack, but the young forward could
replace Edinson Cavani who is expected
to leave in the summer.
There are also questions marks over
the futures of Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony
Martial and Marcus Rashford, so
Antony could be the man Ten Hag
turns to.
Kalvin Phillips (Leeds
United)
England international Phillips, 26, is
another who United could bring to the club.
The central midfielder, who has two years
left on his current Elland Road contract
, could be an option to replace
Matic, who confirmed he will leave the
club at the end of the season.
Paul Pogba is also expected to depart
with his contract set to expire, so the
Red Devils will be on the lookout for
midfield reinforcements.
Phillips, who has made just 14 appearances
this season for Leeds after a long injury
layoff, has also previously been a target
for West Ham, Newcastle and Aston Villa.
United are likely to have the edge given
their ties over the years with Leeds, having
previously brought in Eric Cantona to
Old Trafford from the Yorkshire club, and
recently sold Daniel James to the Whites.
Jurien Timber (Ajax)
An exciting youngster from Ajax’s talent
factory is centre-back Timber, with Ten
Hag likely to swoop for his services.
The 20-year-old is someone who could
immediately remedy the Red Devils’
defensive concerns, given Harry Maguire
continues to flatter to deceive.
A six-cap Netherlands international, Timber
is also able to cover at right-back, which
would ease the burden on Aaron Wan-
, who is also struggling with his form
at Old Trafford.
Timber has amassed an impressive 70
appearances so far for Ajax, and could
partner Raphael Varane at the back should
he make the move to the red half of Manchester
.
Enzo Fernandez (River Plate)
Fernandez could be another to form part
of United’s midfield next season under
Ten Hag.
Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata are
all expected to leave for nothing in June
as the trio are out of contract, along with Matic.
Fernandez, 21, has four goals and three
assists in 11 appearances for River Plate
this campaign, and is continuing to shine.
United scouts are understood to have
watched him in action in River’s recent
2-0 win against Fortaleza in the Copa
Libertadores.
Real Madrid and United’s neighbours
Man City are also said to be battling
for his signature.
Pep Guardiola’s men could have the edge
, given they have signed striker Julian
Alvarez from River most recently.
The Red Devils would, therefore,
have to act fast to secure his signature.
Ryan Gravenberch (Ajax)
Another Ajax acquisition who could
follow Ten Hag to Old Trafford is midfield
sensation Gravenberch.
The 19-year-old continues to shine
in the Ajax engine room, and has proved
an integral member under his current boss.
Gravenberch’s intelligence, physicality
and maturity would prove vital for United
in the middle, but they face competition
from Bayern Munich, who are also running
the rule over the talented teen.
Clocking up 40 appearances so far this
season, the Dutch international has netted
on three occasions, with his most recent
coming in Ajax’s 2-1 defeat to PSV
Eindhoven in the Dutch Cup final.
Darwin Nunez (Benfica)
The Red Devils are likely to be in the market
for another forward and Nunez could
be the man after he dumped Ten Hag’s
Ajax out of the Champions League earlier
this season.
Nunez, 22, has been in prolific goalscoring
form for Benfica this term, netting 33
times in 38 appearances for the Eagles,
and could replace fellow countryman Cavani.
The Uruguay international only joined
the Portuguese giants back in 2020 and
is under contract until 2025, suggesting
United would have to table a hefty fee
in order to prize him away.
If he was sold by the Portuguese giants
, Benfica believe they can break the
record of Joao Felix’s move to Atletico
Madrid, which cost €120million [£99.7m].
Newcastle, meanwhile, have since registered
their interest in the striker who earned praise
from Jurgen Klopp after scoring twice
against Liverpool in the Champions League
quarter-finals.
Aurelien Tchouameni (
Monaco)
Tchouameni has been widely linked
with a move to Old Trafford from
Monaco, with Chelsea and Real Madrid
also fighting for his signature.
The 22-year-old France international
could be an ideal replacement for Pogba
who is entering the final months of his contract.
ESPN claims Ten Hag is ‘keen’ on signing
the playmaker and is a huge admirer
of his versatility.
The report states the Ligue 1 club are open
to negotiations and want £60million for
their prized asset.
Tchouameni has since quashed rumours
linking him with a move away from
the French club, insisting he is solely focussed
on playing for the ‘great’ Monaco.
However, the lure of Manchester United
and the chance of embarking on a new
project could well be too good to turn down.
